Engagement sessions..most couples believe that engagement sessions are for having more photos taken. However, that is not true, engagement sessions serve important reasons in your wedding journey — and it is not for more photos. Weddings are a big deal and here are 5 ways having an engagement session will benefit you:

  1. You will get to learn to be comfortable in front of the camera. Your wedding day is one of the biggest events in your lives and you want to look your best in your photos. Everyone gets a little awkward when there is a professional camera pointed directly at them (myself included). The best way to remedy this is to have a professional camera pointed at you consistently for practice. Most engagement sessions average an hour, an hour and a half. In this time span you will get the chance to make friends with the camera and get used to being comfortable having it following you constantly.

  2. You will learn how to pose. If you are worried about not knowing what to do with your hands, how slow you should be walking or how to interact with your love in front of the camera, this is the best time to learn with your photographer. It’s also great time to find out how both of you are in front of a professional camera. There is usually one partner that is really camera shy or doesn’t like to getting their photo taken. This is a good time to figure out how to take photos together and help with being camera shy. You get to ask your photographer for pointers, try them out and when your wedding day comes, it will come to you naturally and you will confidant in front of the camera

  3. You and your photographer will have a chance to get to know each other. You are going to be spending a lot time together on you wedding day, you should make sure that both you and your photographer are compatible. Having an engagement session gives you the opportunity to get to feel each other out. If you are not feeling your photographer at the engagement session, you now have to opportunity to either find a way to make the relationship work or find a new photographer before the wedding day.

  4. You give your photographer the opportunity to earn your trust and learn how to photograph you. Every couple is different. This gives your photographer the opportunity to learn how to warm you up, how to get you to laugh, what you are self conscious of and how to help you feel comfortable with a little PDA with the camera pointed right at you documenting these private moments. You also get to see how your photographer operates. Do they show up on time, do they live up to the experience they have promised you. This is a great way to find out and be confident about your choice.

  5. You get to tell your story outside of your wedding photos. Most people don’t get professional photos taken and this is a great time to get some outside of your wedding photographs. Wedding photos is one aspect of you and as photos are about telling your story as a couple, engagement photos are a wonderful way to start the first chapter of your visual story together. If you’re wedding has a theme, your engagement photos can set the tone for your upcoming day. You can use these photos for the save the date cards, printed as a book for wedding guests to sign and other social media photos leading up to the wedding day. It’s a great way to build up the excitement for your wedding day.

An extra tip as I end…

If you have already decided on your hair and makeup vendors, you can schedule your hair and makeup trial and engagement session on the same day. This gives you a chance to see how your hair and makeup will look in your photos for your wedding day.
